A Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a digital optical storage medium developed as a high-definition successor to the DVD. It offers a significantly higher storage capacity (at least 25 GB up to over 50 GB) and uses a blue laser to store movies in Full HD (1080p) or even 4K quality.
Main features and advantages:

High resolution: The Blu-ray provides 1920x1080 pixels, which is five times more pixels than a DVD and delivers a sharper image.
Storage capacity: A single-layer disc holds 25 GB, a dual-layer 50 GB, which is sufficient for long movies and bonus material.

Better sound: Blu-rays support lossless audio formats such as DTS-HD Master Audio or Dolby Atmos.
Name: The designation derives from the short-wavelength blue laser that reads the data (the name was deliberately spelled without an "e" to protect it as a brand name).
Backward compatibility: Blu-ray players can usually also play conventional DVDs and audio CDs.
